Smoking Hot, NOT!

Posted by: Darin Manis in tipspoint of viewfun on

I smoked either multiple cigars or cigarettes for just over 7,300 consecutive days. Quitting was easily the hardest thing I have ever done. Even now, almost 1,000 days later, I can't believe I don't smoke anymore. I will let the doctors and other experts speak as to why you shouldn't smoke for health reasons. But, if you are a smoker you already know it's bad for your health, you don't need to hear that again. Rather, I will try to reaffirm what you already know anyway: smoking is bad for your career. Yes, I said it.

When you think of a narcissist, you may think of someone who has gone overboard on self-love, self-admiration, self-infatuation, or self-obsession. Most of us would not consider it a compliment if we were called a narcissist. However, narcisurfiing (a term that has been around for a couple of years) is a definite must. Narcisurfing is conducting web searches for your name. What is most unbelievable to me (at the risk of sounding narcissistic) is that most people don't look themselves up

Rule of 72

Posted by: Darin Manis in tipsfun on

If you have your money in a financial product (or business) that pays a fixed interest rate or return, do you know how to calculate how long it will take for you to double your money? A general rule used to reveal how many years it will take for you to double your money at a given rate of return is called the Rule of 72. To find out how many years it will take to double your money, you simply take the compound return number (the interest rate or return rate) and divide into 72. For example, if

I was speaking to a person yesterday that asked me what I did for a living. When I explained that I recruited exclusively in the financial services industry, he kindly gave me the look as if I must be on my way to the financial aide office in town. Or maybe he was thinking the unemployment line. He patted me on the shoulder and softly said, "I am sorry to hear that. It must be pretty tough right now."

However, a lot of people, including people that work in financial services, don't know how to figure basis points or calculate them. So here are the basics of basis points if you need it:

A basis point is 1/100th of 1%. So 1% equals 100 basis points. Fifty basis points is a half percentage point (also known as a half point).

This is pretty easy, right? Where I see

Thank-you letters (a letter expressing appreciation for the interview) are extremely important in the interview process, all the way through the process. Your competition will likely be writing one; you should as well.
