50 top women in wealth recognized, Meredith Whitney snubbed

WealthManager Web released their third annual 50 Top Women in Wealth Monday. The top 50 women are from the financial services industry, politics, and even law professors who are influencing the financial well being of millions of Americans. The ten women advisory board selected their top 50 from hundreds of nominees.

Some of the winners on the list include women from well known national firms including: Patricia Besser, Managing Director at U.S. Trust; Carla Harris, Managing Director, Morgan Stanley Investment Management; and Sallie Krawcheck, President, Global Wealth and Investment Management, Bank of America Merrill Lynch (couldn't be a list of top women in wealth without Sallie Krawcheck).

Other women recognized include:  Susan Mucciarone, EVP; Senior Managing Director, Eastern Markets, Wells Fargo Family Wealth; Sharmin Mossavar-Rahmani, Managing DirectorChief Investment Officer for Private Wealth Management, Goldman, Sachs & Co.; and Debby McWhinney, President, Personal Banking and Wealth Management, Citi.

Any surprises on this list? A few that caught my eye are: Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House, Representative (D-California), U.S. House of Representatives; Tamar Frankel, Professor of Law, Boston University School of Law; Elizabeth Warren, Leo Gottlieb Professor of Law, Harvard Law School; Chair Congressional Oversight Panel, TARP. I'm not sure about Nancy Pelosi being on this list.

I know not everyone is going to make the list but I was surprised not to see Meredith Whitney.  She is one of the most recognizable names in the money world and her bold analysis has made her one of the brightest and loudest lightning rods in our industry.  In 2009, she did make the Time's Top 100 Most Influential People list and Fortune's The 50 Most Powerful Women list.

Who do you think are the most influential and powerful women in the financial services industry (Investment Management, Banking, Insurance)? I'd love to hear your suggestions. Email me at darin@rjandmakay.com.
