Extreme poverty declines around the world

PovertyExtreme poverty fell in every developing region around the world from 2005 to 2008, according to a World Bank report.  As defined by living on less than $1.25 per day, extreme poverty actually improved despite the worldwide recession, the report found.  Preliminary data indicates that the trend has continued into 2010.

World Bank’s Robert Zoellick to resign

World BankWorld Bank president Robert Zoellick announced today that he plans to step down on June 30th after serving five years guiding the bank through a period of volatile global economics.  His departure starts in motion a process to find a replacement, which traditionally goes to a Washington appointee since the U.S. helped found the bank after World War 2.

Japan disaster is probably costliest in history$309 billion. That's the latest estimate by the government of Japan on the cost of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that devastated the northeastern part of the country.

If the estimate proves correct, the incident in Japan will be by far the most expensive natural disaster in history. Hurricane Katrina, by comparison, which ravaged the New Orleans area in 2005, cost $125 billion, according to the Insurance Information Institute.
