The U.S. had 12 separate weather or climate events in 2011 that caused a billion dollars or more in damage, breaking the record of nine set in 2008, the National Climatic Data Center announced today at a meeting in San Francisco. The number represents more than which occurred in all of the 1980s, even adjusted for inflation. Six of the 12 disasters were severe weather and tornado outbreaks in the spring and early summer.
