Smartphone owners are “the new majority”

SmartphonesSmartphone owners now represent the majority of the mobile phone market in the U.S., according to a new Nielson report.  The nation’s smartphone users totaled 50.4% of the mobile phone subscriber market in March of this year, up from just under 50% in February and 37% in March 2011.  Research firm Canalys issued a recent report that said smartphone shipments in 2011 outnumbered shipments of computers and tablets combined.

2010 Census data indicates that 49.8% of all infants under the age of 1 are members of a race-ethnic minority, according to demographer Bill Frey of the Brookings Institute.  He has published results of census data analysis in America Reaches Its Demographic Tipping Point. The results of his research show that there has been a significant change in the population of the United States, and Frey believes the percentage of all minority infants now tops 50%.
