Beige Book shows improving U.S. economy

Federal ReserveThe Federal Reserve’s latest Beige Book report indicates that the pace of economic activity around the nation is picking up, although the housing market continues to struggle. The report, released yesterday, shows that consumer spending was strong at the end of 2011 and most parts of the county saw significant gains in holiday sales.

Hiring to remain stagnant in 2012 while skilled workers command more pay

careerbuilderLess than a quarter of hiring managers plan to add more employees to their company rosters in 2012, according to a recent CareerBuilder survey that polled more than 3,000 human resource and hiring professionals.  23% of survey recipients said that they would add full-time permanent staff, down slightly from 24% who said the same last year.  7% of companies plan to cut staff in 2012, the same percentage as last year.

Unemployment rate remains at 9.1% despite slightly improved jobs picture

The U.S. economy added more jobs than expected last month as non-farm payrolls added 103,000 jobs in September, the Labor Department said today.  Payroll data for the previous two months were revised upwards by a total of 99,000, indicating that 57,000 jobs were added in August and 127,000 in July.  Despite the revisions and the September gain, the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 9.1% for the third month in a row.
