Exchange traded funds (ETFs) are attracting wealthier, younger and more engaged investors than their mutual fund counterparts, according to a new joint study by Cerulli Associates and the Investment Company Institute (ICI). Advisors, for the most part, are not using a lot of ETFs, but investors who utilize them tend to represent the ideal advisor client.

The market share of dually registered advisors—those advisors with credentials to operate both as registered investment advisors (RIAs) and as affiliates of broker-dealers—is growing at a slower pace than Cerulli Associates analysts had anticipated in February 2010. At that time, Cerulli analysts had estimated that dually registered advisors had an 8.9% market share of assets that could increase to 10.5% in 2012.
